Political and Cultural Hub
A visit to Washington D.C. reveals this country's history and progress since its beginnings in the 17th century, when it was only a group of thirteen colonies settled by European immigrants. Yet the history of the United States was also shaped by the native peoples of North America, whose rich customs and traditions helped build the extraordinary nation that it is now; the best-known and most influential country in the world.
The District of Columbia (as the city of Washington is officially called) is home to the federal government, the cabinet, executive departments, and agencies, such as the United States Department of the Treasury, the Department of Education, the Department of Health, the National Security Council, as well as the centers of the three branches of the federal government that make up the United States republican government, as well as perhaps the most guarded and secured buildings in the world.
The city's most emblematic of buildings is the White House, the official home and principal workplace of the President of the United States. It is an immaculate building surrounded by impeccably landscaped gardens with an impressive display of security. The next most important building in Washington is the Capitol Building, the meeting place of the United States Congress, which is the legislature of the federal government. Finally, the third most important building in Washington, D.C. is the United States Supreme Court of Justice.
Within the District, as it is known by locals, lay the monuments and memorials erected in honor of previous presidents who helped shape the history of this country. These are President Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, and of course, the first president of the United States, George Washington, the man after whom this important city was named after.
Visiting the U.S. capital is a rich cultural experience. It's a glimpse of how the American people live today. When you visit Washington D.C, you learn about America's roots first hand. You have the opportunity to explore the world's largest museum complex, composed of 19 museums, productive research centers, and a wealth of historic documents, artifacts, and pictorial records in all fields of history and science, not only from the United States, but of all the world and space as well.
