Festival Internacional de la Cancion de Vina del Mar
This music festival is the main draw for tourists in Vina del Mar. It's held year after year during the month of February, in the Quinta Vergara Amphitheater. The festival is a competition between internationally-renowned singers, who perform for the multitude of people who come in from all over the world to attend the event. This tradition began when the director of the Vina del Mar Department of Tourism brought together a group of musicians, in order to spice up a fair held by the students of the School of Fine Arts that took place in the gardens of the Quinta Vergara Palace. The event was such a success that an outdoor amphitheater was soon built, which has been hosting Chile's most important musical event since 1960.
Festival Internacional de Cine de Vina del Mar
The city's International Film Festival shows films from countries in the Caribbean, Latin America and Iberoamerica. Many are shown in the Teatro Municipal (Town Theater), while others are shown in movie theaters throughout the city. The festival first took place in 1967 and was run by Aldo Francia, a doctor and Chilean filmmaker who is considered to be one of the forefathers of modern Chilean film. Together with various film buffs, he pulled off an amazing project that led to this famous annual film festival.
Palacio Vergara and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes
This beautiful palace, constructed with Venetian architecture, was built under the orders of Blanca Vergara, daughter of the founder of Vina del Mar. Today, it holds the outdoor amphitheater where the city's Song Festival is held each year, along with the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Fine Arts Museum), displaying beautiful works of art. In the different galleries, you can view Italian paintings dating back to the 17th century, art from the beginnings of Chilean history, and even works from the middle of the 20th century.
Vina del Mar is home to 13 stunning beaches for any type of traveler. You'll find beaches on the coast bordering the downtown area, like Playa el Sol, Casino and Los Marineros. One of the most famous beaches in Vina del Mar is Playa Renaca, whose importance stems from its amazing hotel infrastructure and a reputation as a vibrant tourist hotspot.In this destination known as the "Garden City", there are beaches with light waves, like Playa Las Salinas, ideal for relaxation. Others, such as Playa Cochoa, offer warm waters and great cuisine due to the many seaside restaurants serving all sorts of food, especially seafood. Reloj de Flores
This is one of the main tourist attractions in Vina del Mar, and one of the most visited. Inaugurated in 1962, this beautiful clock is made from beautiful colored flowers, along with Swiss-manufactured clock hands. The unique, flowery clock chimes every hour on the hour.
Jardin Botanico Nacional
The Jardin Botanico Nacional (National Botanical Garden) covers nearly 1,000 acres with beautiful vegetation of different species, from native plants to stunning ornamental flowers. Visiting the Jardin Botanico is an unforgettable experience, giving visitors the opportunity to explore nature. It has various areas for relaxation, along with a variety of interesting recreational areas.
Quinta Vergara Park
This extensive park is rich with beautiful flowers and plants, situated on the edge of Palacio Vergara. The garden has been around since the 19th century with all sorts of exotic plant species brought over from Asia and Australia long ago, during the journeys of the son of Francisco Alvarez, one of Vina del Mar's main founders.
Valparaiso Sporting Club
If you enjoy going to the horse races, this is the ideal spot for you. The club covers 306 acres, and its facilities also include soccer, polo and hockey fields, along with a running and biking track.
Francisco Fonck Museum
Founded in 1937, this museum carries the name of a famed archaeologist who studied central Chile: German doctor Francisco Fonck. The museum displays prehistoric Chile along with its cultural history and natural history through a variety of exhibits. In the different galleries, you'll come across archaeological pieces from Ecuador, Chile and Peru. One of the museum's main attractions is its Easter Island exhibit, showcasing the famous Moai stone statues.
Palacio Rioja Museum
This museum features French-style neoclassic architecture and displays an impressive collection of fine furnishings brought over from France and Spain. The furniture was once used by much of Chile's upper-class society. The building that today houses the museum used to be a palace inhabited by Fernando Rioja, a reputable local banker of Spanish nationality.
Vina del Mar is filled with various plazas (town squares) offering extensive natural green areas, ideal spots for relaxation, recreation and fun, or for unforgettable strolls along their charming paths. Most of these beautiful plazas were created in honor of important people in Chilean history, and many are also home to monuments and beautiful statues. Castillo Wulff (Wulff Castle) is a French-German-style building situated on the coast of Vina del Mar. It was originally the residence of Gustavo Wulff, a German-born businessman. The castle was constructed between 1905 and 1906, and today it houses the Unidad de Patrimonio de la Municipalidad de Vina del Mar (Heritage Union of the City of Vina del Mar), along with an expo center with exhibits displaying paintings, sculpture and photography.
Castillo Brunet (Brunet Castle) holds an important title as a National Historic Monument, featuring medieval-style architecture. It was originally constructed as the official mansion for hosting important visitors, as well as a site for important social events that took place in the city of Vina del Mar.
