Shopping in Salvador: Handcrafts, Souvenirs & Malls
Salvador is a large colonial city located in the state of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil. This big metropolis has many places to go shopping, where you can find from simple stalls on the street or local vendors on the beach to the fanciest shopping centers filled with boutiques and renowned stores. Salvador is definitely a destination where you'll have no trouble in finding that perfect souvenir of your trip to Brazil.
The Modelo Market is definitely worth visiting during your time in this port city. The market is located in the lower part of the city close to the ocean and it is the ideal place to buy locally made handicrafts and to get acquainted with Brazilian culture. There are also lots of small traditional eateries and groups of locals rehearsing capoeira.
The Modelo Market is an attractive tourist spot in Salvador, not only for the more than two hundred stalls, restaurants and bars located here, but also because of the rich history of the neoclassic building built in the 19th century. It was originally constructed to be the third largest customs house in the city, however decades later it reopened as a market selling a range of products including meat, poultry, flour, seafood and oils. To this day it's still considered as one of most interesting places for tourists to visit.
Shopping in Pelourinho
Another area for shopping is the neighborhood known as Pelourinho, located in the north of the city. In this neighborhood you can buy from souvenirs or postcards to jewelry made with fine gemstones mined in Brazil. This part of the city is considered the historic center of Salvador and it is well worth taking some time to explore its many alleyways and winding streets.
For anyone who loves fine jewelry, there are places like the H. Stern Store, a world renowned Brazilian jeweler dedicated to cutting fine gemstones. Another business of this kind is the store Simon Joias, where they cut gemstones, such as topaz, opals and diamonds.
Salvador has no shortage of large shopping malls, like the famous Shopping Barra, a colossal mall that features lots of boutiques from Brazilian designers and international brands. You can pretty much find anything you are looking for here. Shopping Barra is located in an area known as "Barra", not far from the famous Barra lighthouse. Salvador Shopping is another of the city's well known malls. It's located on Trancedo Neves Avenue, a few kilometers away from the city center.
