Joao Pessoa, Brazil
Joao Pessoa: Vacations and travel info
Joao Pessoa is the third oldest city in Brazil. It was founded in 1585 and has nature reserves filled with tropical forests, beautiful cliffs, archeological sites and rare occurrences in nature.
The typical postcard of Joao Pessoa is usually a photo of Parque Solon de Lucena, a park which has a beautiful lagoon and is decorated with trees and gardens designed by the famous landscape artist, Burle Marx. To complement all of this, there is fantastic regional cuisine and some of the most unique popular art in the northeastern part of the country.
Joao Pessoa has a boardwalk of about 21 miles long and offers visitors 10 beautiful beaches with crystal-clear waters like Tambau, Bessa, Cabo Branco and all down the Costa do Sol. The average temperature is about 82 degrees F all year around, an inviting reason to have fun and relax. The locals like to say that the sun rises here first. And many others state that the sunsets over Jacare Beach are the most beautiful in whole world, a place where nature is constantly perfecting the colors and tones.
Joao Pessoa was declared by the UN as the most tree-filled city in the Americas and one of the greenest cities in the world, second only to Paris, France. The folkloric quality of the region is rich and varied, where you can find dances like the "reisado", where all the characters, including female parts, are performed by men.
A Trip Full of Discovery
The neighborhoods of the downtown area are areas that have been considered part of the cultural heritage of the country, like the historic center which has important Baroque buildings that are worth taking a look at. There are buildings like the Catedral do Nossa Senhora das Neves (Cathedral of Our Lady of Snow) which was built in 1602, the Igreja da Misericordia (the Church of Mercy) in 1586 and the Culture Center Sao Francisco. Other such places of cultural heritage include Rua das Trincheiras (Trincheras Street) and the areas surrounding Rua Odon Bezerra in the Tambia area.
The Farol do Cabo Branco (Lighthouse of the White Cable) is one of the few in existence that is in the shape of a triangle, located on top of a cliff. Farther along, you'll find one of the most important geographic formations in Brazil and in the world: the Ponta do Seixas, a cape on the most easterly point of the continent, where the sun's first rays touch South America.
