Attractions in Fortaleza, Brazil: What to do and where to go
Upon arriving to the International Airport Pinto Martins in Fortaleza, the tourist can find themselves in a truly interesting, modern and a typically Brazilian city. The people of Fortaleza are famous for their hospitality and their upbeat personality. It's for this reason that this city has seen the best comedians in Brazil come from here.
Enjoy a wonderful sunset in Ponte Metalica (Metallic Point), stroll down Avenida Beira Mar, go on a boat ride and tour the area or go down to Mucuripe Beach and contemplate the "jangadas" (fishing boats). These are only some of the things that you can do in Fortaleza during the day.
Now at night, there is a long list of bars, cafes and dance clubs in front of the beach, where you can enjoy an excellent evening. Fortaleza also has world-class theaters where you can find night entertainment, from the typical dances of Brazil, theater plays and contemporary dance to incredibly funny comedians.
Beaches and Water Parks
Fortaleza is very proud of its coastline, which is made up of more than 18 miles of soft sand, a great attraction for all those who visit this destination. Enjoy a delicious day of sea, sun and sand. At Praia do Futuro (Future Beach), you can find a strip of simple restaurants which serve up appetizing seafood dishes, fresh from the ocean. Praia de Iracema (Iracema Beach), on the other hand, offers the best bohemian bars in Fortaleza, while Meireles is the ideal beach for going for a tranquil stroll, where you can find the bulk of the hotels of the city.
The Porto Das Dunas Beach (Port of the Dunes), in the metropolitan area of Fortaleza, has a fantastic tourist attraction called Beach Park, a water park with a wave pool and toboggans. It also has a restaurant, live music and even a hotel. One of the toboggans is known as "Insano," one of the tallest in the world.
Those who enjoy surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing can find a true paradise in Fortaleza. Strong winds blow in from the coast of this beautiful destination, providing an excellent backdrop for these activities. Take in a constant amount of sun and the miles and miles of beautiful beaches.
On the other hand, diving and snorkeling are also part of the activities that you can find on the coast of Fortaleza. There are various locales on the main beaches which offer frequent trips to areas where you can find the best visibility and little or no currents, as well was equipment rental. About 10 miles from Mucuripe Beach, you can find the water park Pedra da Risca do Meio, where you can find schools of fish and other marine animals.
Art and Culture
Fortaleza offers modern installations that are often the location of frequented fairs and interesting expositions. Such is the case of Centro de Covencoes de Ceara (Ceara Convention Center), with more than 15,000 square meters of space that can house five events at a time.
The city also has the Centro Dragao do Mar de Arte e Cultura (the Dragon of the Sea Art and Culture Center), an immense complex where you can find the Menezes Pimentel Public Library, the Cearense Culture Memorial, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Rubens de Azevedo Planetarium. A large number of bars, restaurants, handicraft locales and private art galleries surround this cultural center. These elements have made this a unique option for leisure, learning and fun for your next trip to Fortaleza.
And if that wasn't enough, the public plazas of Fortaleza also serve as the stage for many singers, actors, painters and sculpture artists who showcase their talents and passions. In a more formal setting, the Jose de Alencar Theater is on the main forums of this city.
Because Brazil is a mainly Catholic country, the festivities are, for the most part, religiously linked. Fortaleza is true to its nation's traditions and such is the case with August 15, Dia de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao (Day of Our Lady of Assumption), the patron saint of the city. There are also festivals for Holy Week, Corpus Christi and Carnival, which is celebrated much like in other Brazilian cities, with colorful parades and the groups of samba schools dancing samba and maracatu.
Because sometimes only one Carnival is not enough, Fortaleza has another one that has been held since 20 years ago called the "Fortal." This is celebrated in July and is a music festival that features dozens of famous singers from Brazil and beyond. The music that can be heard here can go from the rhythms of "axe" (an Afro-Caribbean fusion of reggae, calypso and marcha) to the modern electronic beats. In the five days that the festival goes for, the total number of people who attend Fortal reaches over the 500,000 mark.
Another event that is worth mentioning is the Ceara Music Festival which is a series of presentations and concerts of pop, rock and Brazilian reggae groups, as well as a fashion show. Ceara Music takes place in October or November and attendance can hit over 50,000. If you visit Fortaleza during these months, don't forget to check the listings and try catching some of the shows. See what the locals listen to and enjoy your stay.
