Fortaleza: Vacations and travel info

A Little History
The history of Fortaleza began around the 1500s, when the Spaniard Vicente Pinzon set foot on these lands and named the the area Santa Maria de la Consolacion. Portuguese colonization began 100 years later, when Pero Coelho de Souza orders the Fortim de Sao Tiago (the Fort of Santiago) to be built near the Ceara River. Later on, the Dutch arrived and occupied the northeast of Brazil, founding Fort Schooneneborch.
When the Dutch were finally thrown out of what is now the state of Ceara in 1654, the Portuguese colonizers renamed the place as Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao (the Fort of Our Lady of Assumption). In 1726, Fortaleza officially became the capital of Ceara.
In the 19th century, Fortaleza became an important urban center, subsisting on cotton production. Given the recent flow of commerce of this product with Europe, the city grew rapidly and emerged with urban infrastructure, schools and libraries, as well as cultural centers and recreational areas.
The 20th century witnessed the industrialization of the city, a sector that still represents more than 20% of the economic activity of the city. At the beginning of the 21st century, the number of inhabitants reached more than 2,000,000. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Fortaleza year after year, interested in a city that has a museums, theaters, libraries and a large cultural offering.
Nowadays, the major draw of this Brazilian city is its 25 kilometers of beautiful beaches: Iracema, Meireles, Mucuripe and Praia do Futuro (Beach of the Future). Each one offers a different attraction, everything from bohemian nightclubs and colorful traditional restaurants to strong winds and waves for those who want to surf. You can also find the legendary festive Brazilian spirit in much of the life in Fortaleza. This friendly, party-going atmosphere is a definitive characteristic of the people, making it an important magnet for travelers from around the world.
In terms of its present day infrastructure, Fortaleza has a modern international airport called Pinto Martins. There is also a network of trains, as well as buses and taxis, that helps tourists and locals travel from one extreme of the city, to the other.
