Close your eyes. Picture a place where the four winds collide. Visualize a fascinating landscape consisting of a lush jungle where enormous trees, freshwater springs and extraordinary fauna are to be found. Open your eyes and find yourself standing at the Wind Rose, one of the most famous viewpoints at the Sumidero Canyon.
This charming natural wonder located in the State of Chiapas is a gorgeous yet enigmatic gorge worthy to be explored from end to end by those who truly enjoy getting in touch with nature. With outstanding cliffs, which can reach up to half a mile, and a river with depths of approximately 300 feet, it is only natural that visitors stand in awe before the Sumidero Canyon's beauty.
Take a motorboat ride departing from Chiapa de Corzo's pier and start an amazing journey through the canyon, a good 14 miles. Find not only thriving vegetation but also enigmatic cave paintings, archeological ruins and other remains that are indisputable evidence of pre-Hispanic settlement.
If you would rather hike across the Sumidero Canyon instead of taking a boat, a hanging bridge will lead you to the Wind Rose. Once there, you can visit a wishing well located in the middle of the jungle where the only sound heard is the lull of water coming down the mountain. Further into the forest, you will find yourself walking along the Path of Conscience where famous thinkers' ideas have been engraved into plaques to remind us of the importance of the environment. At the end of the journey, you will get to the Arbol de la Lluvia (Rain Tree) which will shower you when standing under its shade, regardless of the weather.
For the adventurers at heart, there's also an extreme side of the Sumidero Canyon waiting to be experienced. Zip-line across the gully and enjoy a different perspective of the gorge. Expect an exciting ride when you rappel down from the top of a 100-feet-high cliff. Or climb up a 90-degree-inclination mountainside and get to the top with nothing but the strength of your legs and arms.
If traveling with the whole family, you might be looking for other kinds of activities such as kayaking through the Bahia de los Monos (Monkeys' Bay), or horseback riding across the forest.
Whether by land, water or air, with family, friends or by yourself, discovering the magnificence of the Sumidero Canyon will be a thrilling adventure you will never forget.
