Riviera Maya Jazz FestivalWith one of the world's most beautiful destinations as the backdrop, the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival 2009 will host some of the best Mexican and international jazz musicians and singers during a four day period. This time, for its seventh year, the festival is going to be a memorable music fiesta in the Caribbean city of Playa del Carmen. A great time is guaranteed!

This year the festival will be held from November 25th to November 28th, featuring some of the most famous jazz artists in the world. All the concerts are free of charge, and they will take place from 7:00 p.m. at Mamitas, one of the world's best beaches.

Riviera Maya Jazz FestivalOn Wednesday, November 25, one of the most popular contemporary jazz bands in Mexico, "Sacbe", will play their unique mix of rock, African, Asian, Brazilian and Mexican music. The same day, successful businessman and singer Colin Hunter will delight the public with his sophisticated, upbeat tunes, while The Royal Band, one of the top local groups, will play incredibly smooth Latin jazz. Also on stage will be the traditional host of this prestigious festival, the local band Aguamala, characterized by their Riviera Maya Jazz Festivalsubtle mixes of jazz, funk and rock.

On Thursday, November 26, the festival opens with "Na'rimbo", who blend popular traditional Mexican music and Latin jazz, and there'll also be an appearance by Mark Aanderud, one of the most creative composers and pianists on the international scene. Also on that Thursday, enjoy the performance of exceptional Mexican saxophonist Juan Alzate and prominent pianist, music director and passionate jazz player, Enrique Nery.Riviera Maya Jazz Festival

Grammy winner Jim Beard will be playing for his Riviera Maya fans on Friday, November 27, along with Spyro Gyra, a Grammy-nominated band that adds a touch of Calypso to the contemporary jazz scene. Sergio Mendes, the legendary Brazilian musician and disciple of Antonio Carlos Jobim, will present his latest production on the same night.

Riviera Maya Jazz FestivalOn Saturday, November 28, the festival will offer a magnificent closing show with a performance by Pat Martino, considered one of the most talented jazz guitarists of all time, and famous for the fact that he recovered from a cerebral aneurysm after which he had to learn to play guitar again from scratch. Also performing will be Al Jarreau, one of the mainstays of the contemporary jazz scene and the only vocalist to receive Grammy Awards in three different categories: Jazz, R&B and Pop. For the grand finale, enjoy the presence of Herbie Hancock, about whom the immortal Miles Davis wrote: "Herbie was the step after Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, and I haven't heard anybody yet who Riviera Maya Jazz Festivalhas come after him."
