The nightlife in Atlanta has lots to offer, including bars, restaurants, theaters and clubs. When the sun goes down the city transforms into Hotlanta! There are many places to go if you want to party, depending on what area of the city you are visiting. There are hundreds of places with diverse styles that go well with anyone's taste. Buckhead is the chic zone of Atlanta while in Virginia-Highland the ambiance is more casual. In Little Five Points there is an alternative vibe and Midtown is currently the trendiest area.
Midtown: Taverns, Bars, Lounge Bars
Midtown is in northern Downtown Atlanta and it's the area where most of the business and entertainment centers are. To start the night off, there are places like Midtown Tavern, a bar located in the south of the neighborhood. It has a really good ambience and stays open until very late. For people who are looking for an open air bar, the Park Tavern offers a big yard that has a phenomenal view of the city. This bar opens and closes early, so it is recommendable to go during the afternoon and start the party early.
The sensual Sutra Lounge with its cozy atmosphere is ideal for meeting people. Hush Lounge is an exotic place that has four levels each with a bar and a lot of sofas, which is perfect for couples or groups of friends. Leopard Lounge is a huge yard that is a very popular place with the early twenties crowd. Another lounge-bar is Shout that features a large terrace with fantastic views of the city. Shout is generally more popular with the over thirties crowd.
Northside Tavern, featuring excellent musicians, is considered the house of blues in Midtown Atlanta. Another option for listening to good music is Smith's Olde Bar, which has a similar style to MTV Unplugged with the audience forming a circle around the band. It has a laid back ambience with a cool vibe. For fans of jazz, there's Churchill Grounds, an iconic bar in Midtown where you can find amateur and acclaimed artists. For those of you who love Latin rhythms, Loca Luna features tropical music and the menu includes a variety of savory snacks.
Dancing in Midtown
The former home of the Atlanta Opera House was renovated in order to become the Opera Atlanta Nightclub, one of the hottest places to dance in Midtown. This club has huge dance floors and they are nearly always packed. They play house music here until the early hours of the morning. Also located in Midtown, CosmoLava is a three-story building that features a VIP area, a dance floor and a lounge space. The musical journey starts in the 80's and keeps going with hip-hop, jazz, blues, and pop hits, among many other styles. CosmoLava is one of those few places, which after many years, has become an essential part of the city's nightlife.
Gay Clubs in Midtown
Midtown is well known for its openness and diverse entertainment options including most of the gay friendly bars and clubs. Halo is a good place to socialize and listen to tranquil music with a classic cocktail in your hand. Blake's on the Park is a two-story club that features DJs playing and Drag Queen shows. Entering Oscar's is like stepping back in time to the glamour of Hollywood. Bulldogs is a well known club in Atlanta, where they have theme nights and an eclectic mix of people.
This area is in eastern Piedmont Park, near Midtown. Virginia-Highland has lots of restaurants, bars, clubs and pedestrian streets. It comes alive after dark, especially during weekends. In this casual area of the city, you can find lots of places to dance, like MJQ Concourse, one of the best clubs in Atlanta. This unique place first opened in the 90's and remains a firm favorite today. It has dark decor, an intense sound system, a glowing dance floor and a very hot atmosphere.
Bars and Taverns
Here you will find the oldest tavern in town, Park Restaurant & Tavern, where they also serve Creole food. At Fontaine's Oyster House the ambience is reminiscent of New Orleans and it is a comfortable place for a chat. Highland Taps is great for a beer and the ribs here are simply delicious. Hand in Hand is a traditional English pub that serves a good selection of British beer. There is another place called Neighbor's Pub which is a good option for getting imported beer as well. Moe's and Joe's is a bar that is often packed with big groups of university students.
For live music, there are few places like Blind Willie's, where they play the blues, or Limerick Junction, a great place for folk musicians. Darkhorse Tavern, an old bar, features live music and of course there's The Righteous Room, a very popular local bar where you should arrive early, otherwise it's almost impossible to find a place to sit down.
The Buckhead district is situated in the north of the city and is famous for its chic nightlife. Buckhead is like a city within the city, with lots of excellent places to go for a drink or to dance.

There are quite a lot of places to go for a beer, such as Churchill Arms Pub, a typical English pub. There are also a few places to play board games and have a drink, such as Blackbear Tavern, which incidentally also has live music. Faso is an Irish pub that mixes traditional Irish culture with a modern and cosmopolitan flair. That mix is reflected not just in their dishes or drinks, but also in the young people that go there. The music played here ranges from Britpop to electronic.
The Mood Lounge has ultramodern decor with lighting that reflects the sensual Latin feel of the place. At Beluga Martini Bar they serve fantastic drinks and also have live music. If you want a really good martini then visit Tavern at Phipps, a casual bar popular with the after-work crowd. If you are looking for a really laid back atmosphere try Hole in the Wall, one of those places where everybody seems to be friends and at the end of night maybe they will. Five Paces Inn is a similar spot, in that it is great for friends to mingle and enjoy the very relaxed atmosphere.
Sambuca is an elegant place for dinner and drinks, but above of all it's a great spot for live music. This place is made for a lovely evening, celebrating a very special occasion. The atmosphere and the jazz music definitely create an air of romance.
The exclusive club Sanctuary is located in a two-story building and features dance music. The drinks and the music are what really make this club popular. Tongue and Groove is another club that plays dance music and is popular with locals and tourists alike.
Little Five Points
This Atlanta neighborhood distinguishes itself as the ideal spot for alternative people. There are quite a lot of bars and other entertainment options located in this area. Here you can find the most eclectic mix of people. It is important to mention that you should not confuse Little Five Points with the Five Points in Downtown Atlanta.
The Vortex is a bar that opened in the middle of the 90's and nowadays is the center of Atlanta's rock scene. The bar, in the shape of a skull, is its distinctive characteristic. According to local clientele, The Vortex is also famous for serving the best hamburgers in town. This is the meeting point for bikers, rockers and alternative people. Five Spot is a place for people who are looking for art, drinks and food all under the same roof. This is casual spot features really good live music including a few of Atlanta's biggest indie bands.
