Prepare your camera and get on the most comfortable clothes you own. Enjoy the Chiapas heat while you tour throughout a part of this state's evergreen territory and discover two archaeological sites, both unique for their architecture, history, murals, engravings and lintels.

The first place to visit after breakfast will be Bonampak. This archaeological site features colorful murals known as "frescoes" in some of its structures and buildings. The dense jungle that covered Bonampak for a long time helped to preserve the vibrant colors of these wall paintings. Walk, be amazed and get loads of interesting information on the Mayan culture in Bonampak. Please do not use a flash when taking pictures of the murals. If you want reproductions of the frescoes of Bonampak, we recommend you to take pictures without flash or buy a postcard. This way, the beauty of the murals can be preserved.

The next step of this excursion is to reach a secluded spot in the Lacandona Jungle (Selva Lacandona) called "Escudo Jaguar" (Jaguar Shield), located in the small town of Frontera Corozal, right on the southern border of Mexico. At this point, board a boat to take an entertaining and ecological trip that will last approximately one hour and ends with your arrival to the hidden Yaxchilan. This site, called "the city of the green stones", was one of the most important cities of the Mayan civilization, which benefited from the nearness to the Usumacinta River. Architectonically speaking, Yaxchilan is recognized by its impressive stelas, by the tall decorative walls that crown its temples and also by the intricate alleys of its exceptional building called "The Labyrinth".

Bonampak and Yaxchilan were practically inaccessible until few years ago, when the road used in this excursion was constructed. The trip on the highway, along with the boat ride on the Usumacinta, opened the possibility for those archaeology lovers (especially those of the Mayan culture) to easily get to these archaeological sites. Visit and admire them anytime.
