At 8,461.29 ft. above sea level, the top of Mount Cubilete is home to this phenomenal religious sanctuary. It is one of Mexico's most important religious centers, located in the centermost geographic point of the country. This was originally the site of another smaller statue of Christ prior to this one, which was bombed by an aircraft during the most critical stage of the ''Cristero War'', at the end of the Mexican revolution.
The current building is the foundation for this gigantic statue built by Nicolas Mariscal in 1944. The whole building and the statue itself were designed in an Art Deco style which can be appreciated in the base, the reliefs, as well as in the choice of materials used in the construction. Christ is portrayed with open arms, casting his majesty over the whole country, while the two angels at his feet are offering him a thorny crown and a royal crown. There is a splendid view of the center of Guanajuato from the entrance.
Mount Cubilete is only 35 minutes from the city and the terrain is quite rocky, so we suggest you wear comfortable shoes or sneakers.
