In Torreon you will find attractions for all ages and tastes and you may be surprised by how many different activities there are available. From ecotourism on the outskirts, a walk through the streets in downtown, or spending an afternoon outdoors in one of the many parks, this is definitely a city of endless possibilities. Alternatively you could go shopping at one of the trendy malls or visit the fascinating museums in town.

There are plenty of opportunities for golfers to play their favorite sport on the numerous lush courses in and around Torreon. And the city's vibrant, exciting nightlife will keep you coming back for more. Eco-travelers should definitely take the time to visit the Bilbao Dunes and the many other natural attractions located close by. Likewise it is a good idea to visit the Christ of the Noas, a monument at the top of Noas hill, from where you can get a fantastic, panoramic view of the city.

In spite of the city's relatively young age, there are several constructions with outstanding architecture. These buildings reveal the rich history of the city, the passing of time and the changes brought on by progress and development. You will find that most of the buildings are easily accessible from downtown, most are within walking distance and some of them by car. Visit the marvelous Chinese Bank, the Arocena Building, the La Laguna Casino or the Municipal Archives, an excellent eyewitness to the history and hard work of this town, which the locals take so much pride in.

Cristo de las Noas

The Christ of the Noas is an obligatory sight to see while in Torreon. Located on top of Noas Hill, this enormous sculpture of Christ stands erect, with welcoming open arms. It is an impressive statue, built 220 meters above the city and it is the second tallest statue in Latin America. Constructed using 580 tons of concrete and standing an incredible 22 meters high, it is similar to the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The statue also exemplifies how the Christ of Noas watches over the city. Besides the sculpture, you can also find replicas of the Holy Land, such as the Cave of Bethlehem, the Calvary and the Holy Tomb. Take the time to visit the statue and admire the wonderful view of the city.

City Museums

TorreonWhatever your taste is in arts and culture, Torreon has interesting museums for you to explore. The Arocena Museum is one of the most outstanding museums in the city. It houses a collection of works of art dating from Pre-Columbian times to the Spanish Conquest, and the Independence to other important periods in Mexican history, including the present. The museum features permanent and temporary exhibits and always has something interesting to see. The museum has future plans for expansion that include a modern library, an auditorium, a coffee shop, bookstore and a media room with videos and computers.

You can also visit the History Museum, known as the Casa del Cerro, a marvelous piece of architecture. This museum displays artifacts from the founding of Torreon along with other important historical periods. It also houses an art gallery, and an outdoor theater for concerts and shows. Other interesting museums are the Paleontology Museum, located downtown; The Railroad Museum, the Museum of the Revolution, the Regional Museum of La Laguna (one of the largest in the city), and the Mexico Mint Museum, which displays the largest coin ever minted in Mexico.

The Perla Canal, built at the end of the 19th century, is an artificial waterway with a series of underground tunnels originally used for irrigation. The tunnels have recently been restored and turned into an art gallery, displaying many interesting works of art. It is easily accessible from the Plaza de Armas (Armory), downtown.

Bilbao Dunes is a large area of desert with fine sands and it is a wonderful place for people interested in ecotourism to visit. You can rent an ATV to ride around the desert and see the unique plant and animal species; or go Sandboarding, similar to snowboarding, but over sand not snow. People seeking adventure and nature will really enjoy visiting this fabulous place, just 45 minutes away from Torreon. After an exciting day of exhilarating outdoor fun, why not visit the date plantations nearby. Sample the wonderful dates and buy them at very reasonable prices. Don't forget to bring along your sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and your personal supply of water.

This is one of the most popular outdoor spaces in Torreon. Besides being a beautiful area of wilderness within the city, the park also provides recreational activities. It is the perfect place to get some fresh air, relax, or play sports in the park's facilities, which include a running track and three indoor tennis courts. Alternatively watch cultural events, concerts and performances in the outdoor theater, with a capacity for around 1000 people. A haven in the middle of the city, it's great for family outings or just to relax and get some clean fresh air.

The Armory is the heart of Torreon. Located on the main square of the city, this is the most important historical landmark whose origins date back to the founding of Torreon. Here you can enjoy the small town atmosphere, relax under the shade of the trees, listen to a local band or chat while you sit on the wonderful park benches. Treat yourself to a delicious ice-cream, lemonade, or a typical candy. You can't miss this place, especially on Sundays, the best day to appreciate the easygoing lifestyle of the locals.

Torreon's main source of oxygen, this enormous greenhouse features an auditorium, tennis courts, an amusement park and a museum. Located at the intersection of Juarez and Cuauhtemoc, this wilderness is a daily meeting place for both nature and sports fanatics. It's also great for family outings and there are plenty of activities for kids as well.

In the Venustiano Carranza Wilderness, you can find one of the main museums of Torreon, the Regional Museum of La Laguna; a modern, well planned complex with large exhibition rooms, a library, bookstore, auditorium and coffee shop. The museum holds workshops, guided tours, conferences and has permanent exhibits of regional artifacts from Mesoamerica and the different ethnic groups of the country.
