tlaxcala shopping

Tlaxcala is one of the states with the widest variety in handcrafts in all of Mexico. They originate from pre-Hispanic times, product of a combination of European elements and Mexican artistic creations in such things as textiles made on back-strap looms. Using traditional techniques implies hand-weaving fibers, making them pliable and dyeing them with vegetable dyes. Luckily, the process has been passed down from generation to generation and now we can enjoy a very diverse and much appreciated workmanship.

In Tlaxcala, you can find beautiful sarapes, rugs and colorful "gobelinos" (Louis XIV-style rugs). Originally from the Tlatempan municipality, the carnaval masks are one example of skillful workmanship. The same goes for the Talavera ceramic, crafts with onyx and "popotillo" (art craft of colored straw, pasted down and placed on wood so as to form images).

The same is also done with flowers and finely ground and dyed sawdust, this tradition being particular to Huamantla. The most sought after are the "alebrijes", fantastical and brightly colored paper mache figures are normally made as souvenirs, used to decorate floats or can be made into masks.
