
The indigenous populations of Sonora, such as the Yaqui, Mayo, Seri, Opata, Papago, Guarijio and Kikapu have passed on their traditions and heritage through the generations in a variety of ways. It's a state that has preserved the identity of its culture, displayed throughout their handicrafts', native music and dance, probably the most representative of which being the "Danza del Venado"(The Dance of the Deer), and also through manufacturing. Even today they have a great skill for the production of goods, most depicting scenes involving animals and the environment.
As part of its culture, Sonora has a wide variety of handicrafts, which the production of, has been passed from generation to generation, helping preserve the identity of the state. The craftworks of Sonora are, in the main, practical items, many of which are utensils, clothing and religious icons and used by natives in their dances and celebrations during rituals and festivities.
When you go shopping, you will find stores that offer anything from earthenware articles, such as pitchers and pots to items made of tree roots, wood, palm and wool (used to make hats, masks, dolls and bags). The artisans of the mountain regions make primarily articles with leather, while in the coastal area, more common place are baskets and hand carved sculptures made from Palo Fierro wood, usually representing animal shapes and indigenous people. Alternatively you can purchase souvenirs inspired by the ocean and constructed with sea shells.
Hermosillo Handcrafts Zone
Located in Hermosillo downtown, in an area named El Correo, you can find some of the most ornately beautiful souvenirs of the entire region. Various artisans display their works of art, the most beautiful of which are carved with "Palo Fierro" wood. If you prefer, you can take a taxi from your hotel, the driver will definitely take you to the best places to find handcrafts, souvenirs and typical food of the region, such as dried meat and "Coyotas".
Plaza Ley Sahuaro (Ley Sahuaro Mall)
Located in the city of Hermosillo, is the Ley Sahuaro Mall. This Plaza features a variety of different stores, from designer boutiques, to shoes, jewelry and more. Located in the mall is also an excellent food court consisting of a variety of different restaurants for every taste. A perfect place to spend the day and pick up a few bargains or souvenirs.
Plaza del Sol
Located in ' Peripheral Avenue' in Hermosillo, just 5 minutes from the airport, Plaza del Sol is a splendid option to go shopping. It has various clothing and shoe stores, picture stores, banks and many restaurants where you can 'spend' a wonderful time.
