Description
Sinaloa is located in a natural fertile region for agriculture, since the state counts on 11 rivers and 11 dams, for which it is known as "the granary of Mexico". Despite the changes brought by time and technology, the Sinaloans have successfully conserved the enchantment and flavor of their historical traditions. Festivities started centuries of years ago by indigenous people and by the first settlers, are still enjoyed, and thanks to the intention to get one culture in common, now they are proudly showcasing delicious cuisine and pre-Hispanic music and dances.
The Sinaloan personality is a result of the mixing of indigenous groups and "mestizos" (people of mixed European and aborigine ancestry) that took place at the end of the 19th century. Foreign populations that came to Sinaloa include Chinese, Japanese, Greek, German, French, Libyan and American, people who brought with them the tradition of their native cultures and dedicated part of their profits to the prosperity of the new land that received and sheltered them. Due to these benefits, the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th were times of immense prosperity in Sinaloa.
In their daily life, the people of Sinaloa always find a way to show their exceptional friendliness and sincerity. They are well known for being kind but honest at the same time, especially for the gaiety they manifest during fiesta times. Through the year, the municipalities that make up the state hold numerous festivals and cultural events. They hold celebrations to honor the patron saint or to show gratitude for a prosperous harvest.
Fiestas always include music; the most indigenous music of Sinaloa is called "the tambora" which is so called because of the special role of the tambor (drum), besides three dozen instruments, mostly wind and percussion. Representative songs of Sinaloa folklore highlight the passion of the region's inhabitants.
