Merida Shopping Stores | BestDay Travel Agency
In Merida and Yucatan, shopping is a well established tradition. In the "White City", you will find lots of modern luxurious malls such as Plaza Las Americas and La Gran Plaza, which both have great sales, the latest fashions and food courts. Come and discover the most popular Merida and Yucatan shops.
The most charming Merida and Yucatan shops are the small ones, which have lovely locally designed clothes, handcrafts, jewelry, leather shoes, candies and much more. Located in downtown, the majority of these shops are owner operated.
Clothes in Merida, made of 100% natural cotton, are part of the cultural heritage. Women still proudly wear huipiles, a dress used for every day wear, as well as for parties and special events, when they are covered with spectacular jewels. Don't miss the opportunity of buying one for yourself or a relative as a souvenir while on your trip to Merida. Huipiles are a part of Mexico's history, their flower embroidery shining full of color on top of an impeccable white fabric. For men there are guayaberas, which are fresh shirts with discrete designs that gentlemen wear for special events. For children there are also unique pieces designed with that special "Yucatecan" style and make excellent souvenirs as well.
Hammocks are part of the style of living in the Yucatan Peninsula. Imagine yourself at home gently swinging in a beautiful hand woven hammock that will remind you of your wonderful vacation in Merida. Not to be missed are the multi-colored and lively markets of Lucas De Galvez, Mercado de Santa Ana and El Bazar Garcia Rejon, where you can find all kinds of handcrafts and local dishes.
La Plaza Grande (The Main Square)
In the very heart of the city you will find La Plaza Grande (The Main Square) a beautiful park where families come to spend a quiet afternoon. In the surrounding streets there are dozens of handicraft stores where you will surely find the perfect souvenir to take home with you as a reminder of your trip to Merida. Also located in this area are the cathedral and some small museums, theaters, bookstores, restaurants and cafes.
Merida on Sundays
If you are lucky enough to be in Merida on a Sunday, in the main Plaza near the City Hall, you will be able to enjoy the fantastic party that is "Merida on Sundays". There are art performances, exhibitions and shows all surrounded by small stands full of interesting and unusual products. The main streets of the downtown area are closed to cars and pedestrians take over the streets, walking among stands selling handicrafts, hammocks, clothes, shoes and an endless variety of fun things to buy.
Plaza Las Americas (Las Americas Mall)
Las Americas Mall has the best boutiques, shoe stores, electronics shops and department stores, all under the same roof. There is a food court with excellent dining choices and you will also find a 10 screen movie theater showing the latest films. Bring your family and have a fun afternoon. At Las Americas Mall you will find pretty much anything you need.
La Gran Plaza
Located in the north of the city, La Gran Plaza is a modern mall with a large variety of stores and the best clothing and shoe brands. There are also bookstores, photo stores, sport shops, electronics stores, auto shops, music stores, pet shops and many others. This mall also features a fast-food area, an arcade and a multi-screen movie theater.
