Los Bules
Bules are pumpkin shaped fruits, with a wide base and an elongated end. The artisans of Sinaloa recreate everyday situations on the surface of the fruits using a pre-Hispanic technique, where the surface is scratched, marked and polished with the use of flint, then engraved using a hot wand. In some cases the piece is encrusted with shells, gold flake and precious stones. The bule is then treated with a chemical to preserve the wood and to keep bugs and germs from harming it. The strength and longevity of the bule is extended by using a process that petrifies the wood and tests have shown that a piece can last from between 60 to 500 years.
