La Paz is on a deep inlet in the Bay of La Paz on the Sea of Cortez. The city overlooks the bay and it's protected from the open waters of the Sea of Cortez by a long sandbar called El Mogote. La Paz lies only 51 miles North of the Tropic of Cancer and 118 miles north of Cabo San Lucas, located at the southern tip of the peninsula.
