
The people of Ciudad Obregon inherited their enthusiastic hard-working attitude from the Yaqui tribe. Over the years they have built up a city rich in culture and history, which can be appreciated in the many monuments located throughout Ciudad Obregon, such as one dedicated to family, or another in honor of the hero Juan Maldonado Tetabiate. There are also other monuments of great historical interest, such as the Cajeme Indian (Jose Maria Leyva), and the Yaqui Deer Dancer, who is the most representative figure of the city.
In Ciudad Obregon there are icons everywhere that symbolize the culture and history of the city. Its parks, plazas and traffic circles always feature something to be admired, like in Pioneers Park, or the various traffic circles that commemorate local heroes, such as "La Glorieta de la Cascada Municipal" (traffic circle of the municipal cascade), and the "Discobolo" monument which was created in recognition of local sportsmen, located next to the Ostimuri park and the amazing Nainari Lagoon.
This region is excellent for hunting, in particular mule deer, white tale deer, doves, ducks, turkey and rabbits. However before you hunt here, ensure you are fully aware of all the strict regulations and rules. Another popular activity is fishing at the Oviachi Dam, where the yearly International Largemouth Bass Tournament is held.
Due to its fertile valleys, the agricultural city of Ciudad Obregon also has fascinating natural attractions perfect for leisure activities where local families and tourists come to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. Nainari Lagoon
This 1.25 mile wide, manmade lagoon is surrounded by an abundance of leafy trees. It is like an oasis in the middle of this growing city and it's the perfect place to enjoy outdoor pursuits, such as hiking, bird watching or just spending a family day out enjoying nature. It has two piers, from which water sports such as canoeing, sailing and skiing can be enjoyed. This is definitely one of the most popular attractions in Ciudad Obregon.
Sagrado Corazon de Jesus Cathedral
With a distinct modern architectural style this cathedral is one of the newest in the country, in fact it was only built in 1977. The interior exhibits include an incredible altarpiece with marble details and intricate gold and bronze inlays.
Alvaro Obregon Plaza
This Plaza is located in downtown and is home to the Alvaro Obregon monument, the Monumental Clock, and the Ornamental Fountain. In this tranquil plaza the people of Ciudad Obregon celebrate fairs, parades and other festivities. The Cathedral and Town Hall are also located in the area surrounding the Alvaro Obregon Plaza.
Ostimuri Kid's Park
This recreational area, great for families, includes fairground rides, rest areas and a little train that runs throughout the park. It also features a planetarium and a zoo where white-tailed deer, blue gnus and gila monsters, as well as many other animal species from the region, can be seen.
Alvaro Obregon Dam
Also known as the Oviachic Dam, this is the largest dam in the state. The water in the dam comes from the Yaqui River and is used to irrigate the fields, as well as to produce electricity. It has a viewing point, from which you'll have an amazing panoramic view of the beautiful landscape, and in the surrounding areas there are recreational areas where lots of eco-touristic activities can be enjoyed. The most popular activities include bird watching, fishing, cycling, hiking, duck and dove hunting, and lots more. Alvaro Obregon Dam is 28 miles from the municipality of Cajeme, and is an incredibly popular place to spend the day for both locals and also tourists visiting Ciudad Obregon. The dam is famous because every year, in November, they hold the International Largemouth Bass Tournament.
Oviachi Recreational Park
Located near the Alvaro Obregon dam, this park has lots of green areas which are perfect for a family picnic or a barbecue. After eating, there are a great variety of activities to enjoy in the beautiful surrounding areas.
Antonio Fernandez Modelo Cultura Center
This is a modern cultural center where people can learn about the history of Sonora State, as well as the evolution of beer in Mexico. It was funded by the Grupo Modelo brewing company and features a series of photographs, paintings, sculptures and other temporary exhibitions. The center also has an auditorium where both business and cultural events are held.
Huivulai Island
This island is a great place to visit if you want to enjoy beautiful tranquil beaches, aquatic activities, fishing or experience the excitement of riding the dunes on an ATV. It has a 97 meter deep fresh water pond and an abundance of date palms, which are the sanctuary for many bird species, such as cranes, pelicans, herons and albatrosses. Approximately 20 kilometers long and meaning "long neck" in the ancient Mayo language, Isla Huivulai is located only 28 miles south of Ciudad Obregon and really is a wonderful place to spend the day.
Yaqui Museum
In the town of Cocorit, one of the main places where the Yaqui tribe settled, located 7 kilometers from Ciudad Obregon, you will be able to see the largest exhibition of the Yaqui culture, in the area. The exhibition rooms are full of interesting displays that teach you about the history, customs and traditions of this fascinating ethnic group. During your visit you can learn about their handicrafts, such as masks, drums and the elaborate embroidered clothing that the Yaquis skillfully create. The museum is a historic building, dating back to 1890, which has served, over time, as military barracks, a hotel and a residential home. Nowadays, the museum is an important cultural center that promotes and reinforces the Yaqui culture through music, handcrafts, dance and language, helping to keep alive the interesting heritage of this very interesting culture.
Cocorit Mansion
This neoclassic mansion has four exhibition rooms where paintings, photographs, sculptures and handicraft exhibitions are all permanently displayed. One of its main purposes is to promote the fine arts, in particular to people with a limited budget. It is located in the town of Cocorit, which was one of a group of 8 missions settled on the Yaqui tribe's land, in 1617. This attraction is only a short ten minute ride away from Ciudad Obregon.
ITSON Art Gallery
The "Instituto Tecnologico de Sonora" is open to the public and features an exhibition room where various displays by local, regional and renowned international artists are shown.
